Das Tobias Stavngaard Sextett ist eine aufstrebende dänische Band, bei der moderne Kompositionsmusik auf die traditionelle Besetzung eines Jazz-Sextetts trifft. „Was das Tobias Stavngaard Sextett auszeichnet, ist seine akribische Liebe zum Detail und die kompositorischen Aspekte der Jazzmusik in kleiner Besetzung.“ Am 27. Oktober 2023 veröffentlichte die Band ihr zweites Album, By the Last Man. Für diese Veröffentlichung ließ sich der Komponist und Bandleader Tobias Stavngaard vom Konzept der Universalgeschichte inspirieren – einer besonderen Art der Geschichtsschreibung, die darauf abzielt, die kollektive Geschichte der Menschheit als einheitliche Erzählung zu schreiben. Kurz nach der Veröffentlichung wurde das Album vom dänischen Radiosender P8 Jazz zum „Album der Woche“ gekürt und hat seitdem mehrere begeisterte Kritiken erhalten. Michael Westmore von Jazz Daily schrieb: „Diese Veröffentlichung festigt die Position der Band als Innovatoren in der Welt des zeitgenössischen Jazz und verspricht eine spannende Zukunft für dieses talentierte Ensemble.“ Die neue Veröffentlichung knüpft an den Erfolg ihres Debütalbums Historier om dette og hint (2022) an, das mehr als eine Million Mal gestreamt wurde. Jedes Album basiert auf einem eigenen philosophischen Thema, das sich wie ein roter Faden durch das Repertoire zieht. Bei ihren Live-Auftritten legt die Band großen Wert darauf, jedes Stück zu präsentieren und das Publikum in ihr musikalisches und philosophisches Universum eintauchen zu lassen.
The Tobias Stavngaard Sextet is a Danish up-and-coming band where modern compositional music meets the traditional setup of a jazz sextet. “What sets the Tobias Stavngaard Sextet apart is their meticulous attention to detail and the compositional aspects of small-group jazz music.” On October 27, 2023, the band released their second album, By the Last Man. For this release, composer and bandleader Tobias Stavngaard drew inspiration from the concept of universal history — a particular type of historiography aimed at writing the collective history of humanity as a unified narrative. Shortly after the release, the album was selected as ‘Album of the Week’ on Danish radio station P8 Jazz, and has since received several glowing reviews. Michael Westmore from Jazz Daily wrote: "This release cements the band’s position as innovators in the world of contemporary jazz, promising an exciting future for this talented ensemble." The new release builds on the success of their debut album, Historier om dette og hint (2022), which has been streamed more than one million times. Each album is based on its own philosophical theme, creating a cohesive thread through the repertoire. In their live performances, the band places great emphasis on presenting each piece, immersing the audience in their musical and philosophical universe.
