Das Anfang 2024 gegründete Matthew Liebeck Quartett ist ein internationales Jazzensemble mit Sitz in Berlin, angeführt von Trompeter und Komponist Matthew Liebeck (London, UK). Inspiriert vom Erkundungsgeist der 1960er Jahre Miles Davis Quintett (Zweites Großes Quintett) und die harmonische Raffinesse von Herbie Hancocks Blue Note-Aufnahmen, das Quartett kombiniert starkes melodisches Schreiben mit dynamischen rhythmischen Rahmen. Ein bestimmendes Merkmal des Sounds der Gruppe ist seine Integration der Drum-and-Bass-Ästhetik in einen Jazz-Kontext, geprägt von der klassischen Arbeit von Pioniere des goldenen Zeitalters wie Photek, Dillinja und Source Direct. Anstatt direkt zu zitieren, diese Einflüsse prägen die Herangehensweise der Band an Groove, Schwung und Form. Die internationale Aufstellung des Quartetts - zusammen mit Musikern aus Großbritannien, Deutschland und Japan - trägt zu einer
hochgradig interaktiven und offenen Musiksprache bei und betont kollektive Improvisation und tiefes Zusammenspiel von Ensemble.
Founded in early 2024, the Matthew Liebeck Quartet is an international jazz ensemble based in Berlin, led by trumpeter and composer Matthew Liebeck (London, UK). Inspired by the exploratory spirit of the 1960s Miles Davis Quintet (Second Great Quintet) and the harmonic sophistication of Herbie Hancock’s Blue Note recordings, the quartet combines strong melodic writing with dynamic rhythmic frameworks. A defining feature of the group’s sound is its integration of drum-and-bass aesthetics into a jazz context, shaped by the classic work of golden age pioneers such as Photek, Dillinja and Source Direct. Rather than directly quoting them, these influences shape the band’s approach to groove, momentum and form. The quartet’s international line-up – featuring musicians from the UK, Germany and Japan – contributes to a highly interactive and open musical language, emphasising collective improvisation and deep ensemble interplay.
