The Steve Nanda Jazz Octet – A Modern Jazz Ensemble The Berlin-based drummer, composer, and bandleader Steve Nanda is a versatile musician with deep roots in jazz and fusion. His 2023 debut album Seven Years was recorded with, among others, the renowned saxophonist Tony Lakatos, Robert Lakatos, and Doug Weiss, impressively showcasing his broad musical spectrum. With his octet, however, a different side of Steve Nanda is presented: writing with many instruments in mind, yet not as big as a big band, nor as small as a small ensemble. This mid-sized format allows for rich, layered arrangements that blend an exciting mix of jazz, Latin, and funk. The music thrives on complex yet accessible structures, powerful grooves, and open improvisations that transport and captivate the audience into new sonic worlds. Together with his band colleagues Florian Menzel (trumpet), Paul Andrews (alto saxophone), Ori Jacobson (tenor saxophone), Humberto “Tito” Lopez (trombone), Elli Soos (baritone saxophone), Peter Gyarfas (piano), and Thiago Duarte(acoustic bass), he creates a multifaceted and intense musical experience. Steve Nanda's energetic yet sensitive drumming forms the core of the band, making every concert a special experience for jazz fans and the curious alike.
