United Nation QuartetJazz & Blues Tony Hurdle (tb), Tal Balshai (p), Robin Draganic (b), Andrea Marcelli (dr) [Info +/-]
In a world where hunger, war, racism and never-ending chaos reign, the United Nations Quartet wants to set an example with its message of unity, peace and respect for different cultures and show that music brings people and nations together can. Four nations, America, Italy, Israel and Canada are represented by four outstanding musicians. The quartet's musical focus is on various styles of jazz, located in the spectrum between Duke Ellington and Wayne Shorter. Tony Hurdle sets highlights with interpretations by composers who are less well known in this country, such as Jimmy Thompson, Leslie Ford and Felix Leach, all of whom hail from the Philadelphia / New Jersey area and have performed with well-known jazz greats. The U.N.Q. four jazz musicians with very individual, very different backgrounds merged into a unique sound. The high demands on their own work result in a mixture that often astounds the listener, because the sound is so refined and clear that one gets the impression that the four musicians have been playing together for at least twenty years.

The fresh mix of Afro and Latin beats, reggae in combination with the typical oriental flair does not fit into any genre drawer. Traditional folk songs from North Africa and Arabic hits are completely reinterpreted with an amazing range of styles from 3 continents - Africa, South America and Europe. Catchy arrangements of keyboard and guitar with Latin and Afro beats make your legs tingle. Add to that a funky baseline, melodic horns and the lead singer's voice that make up the unique mix of Nasser Kilada and Groove of the Nike. The drummer's Caribbean note is already bringing a bit of summer to Berlin. This is combined with the typical oriental sound of the traditional instruments oud and tabla. The German guitarist Paul Brändle internalized this at a young age. With this principle, as well as with his dreamlike security in dealing with his instrument, Paul astonishes the audience in and around his adopted home of Munich. The European jazz scene should follow for the graduate of the University of Music and Theater in Munich. Straight ahead swinging modern jazz in the tradition of Wes Montgomery and Grant Green forms the core of Paul's playing, which also incorporates influences from John Abercrombie, John Scofield and B.B. King shows. These influences flow into Paul's own musical world, the boundaries of which are constantly being expanded by the ingenuity of his fellow musicians. The music of the Paul Brändle Trio does not try to impress with virtuosic effects, rather the sensitive interaction of the artists creates music that is worth penetrating the surface and immersing yourself in the sound. In this way, one witnesses a lively conversation, of dialogue and trialogue, in which the solo voice between the interlocutors shines. Paul Brändle and his guitar duo Emminger / Brändle won first prize in the state competition "Jugend Jazzt" in 2012 and first prize in the Jump 'n Jazz competition for young musicians in Fürth in 2014. In addition to his trio, he is a member of the Rick Hollander Quartet and the Christian Elsässer Orchestra.

From raw swing to your own style, from America to Portugal to Germany Influenced by traditional jazz, the three musicians play jazz with unbridled curiosity, exploding meter and nostalgic longing, so that new atmospheres and dreams open up. Here you can hear original compositions that were initiated and developed by the jazz of Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk and the traditional music of Portugal. It's always about the whole: statements, not contingencies, perfection, not particularity. The music thrives on the changing influence of the three, so that the classic scheme of soloist and accompanists partially dissolves in the dynamic process with temporary ecstasy. The beat and groove of traditional jazz are picked up by the sound of the soloist and enriched with the Saudade of Portugal, resulting in a unique sound aesthetic of harmony, melancholy, fire and surprise.

The sound is correspondingly diverse: an amalgam of all sorts of styles between jazz, art pop, free improvisation and neoclassic. The Swiss musician, composer, producer and arranger with Japanese-Polish roots always finds a clear line with style based on hundreds of hours of practice. Like a Zen master who looks at what is happening from afar, classifies it and writes it down; clear, focused and smart. Yumi Ito lives and works in Basel and Zurich, performs regularly all over the world and has shared the stage with artists such as Al Jarreau, Wolfgang Muthspiel and Becca Stevens. She sets her own art to music in the trio, which includes the Spanish "percussion poet" Iago Fernández and the Polish bassist Kuba Dworak. The sewing machines quartet found their sound with their third studio album "Times": The unmistakable duet of saxophone and guitar became the trademark of the young Munich quartet. With "Times" a new era begins, if you will, in the eight-year history of the quartet around guitarist Simon Harscheidt. The overarching goal of the composer hasn't changed since the beginning: the melodies of his songs should be beautiful, provocative and catchy. Why shouldn't contemporary instrumental jazz also produce catchy tunes? The Süddeutsche Zeitung describes it like this: “Musically, the four move between pop and classic, between electric and acoustic music, between melodic compositions and, what a pleasant surprise, the blues. […] And how they played it, the “sewing machine blues”, that just demands respect. By the way: The band name alone is already worthy of an award!”

The band’s interaction creating a united sound experience is one of the main ambitions. However, the individual and creative opportunities of each musician are as important. Diego Piñera has been nominated both nationally and internationally since 2005 as a drummer "instrumentalist" and as a songwriter, most recently with the ECHO JAZZ 2017. He is considered an exceptional artist in his field. Born in Montevideo, he started jamming at the age of three and later studied at the University of Music in Havana and at Berklee College. In 2015, the album "My Picture" was released, which critics described as a "masterpiece by one of the most interesting drummers of our time". Diego Piñera establishes his style here, a combination of "odd meters" crooked bars and melodic uses of the drum set. As a sideman, Diego Piñera is a guest at national and international festivals around the world. With his album "Odd WISDOM", in which he traced the liveliness and depth of the music, he stepped out of the role of sideman. With the recording of ODD WISDOM with Donny McCaslin, Ben Monder and Scott Colley, he laid the foundation for founding his band "BERLIN ODD WISDOM" as bandleader and composer.

This quintet gives solid musical pleasure. A group of great musicians make a bunch of well composed music with indestructible arrangements and compositions. Music that you like to immerse yourself in, that you like knowing it will wash over you. What more do you want? What more do you want? Here's an extra melodic catch? Because a dropped eight? Uiuiui! Does not have to. As the two saxophonists inflate, air molecule stays where it needs to be (“Shalom Lachem”). It likes to whirl on this recording, but then it also sounds full, like from the American quartet of Keith Jarrett in the 70s. Even if it pays off musically in the ballad "Ve Ulay". And that's due to the drums, bass and piano, which develop this musical background or stage it directly.

The new trio around the German-Australian pianist Max Petersen takes their listeners into a rich world of different musical influences. In this, classical and modern sounds harmonize and groove and swing Afro-American music fills our bodies with emotions. Unexpected turns, charged rhythms, elegant melodies, new sounds, polyphony, groove and beat make a concert with this trio an unprecedented acoustic experience. When Max Petersen arrived in New York in 2013, he had no idea just how closely connected jazz is to the history of the United States. Jazz is something else there. What does it mean when something "swings"? What is behind this "coolness" that Miles Davis embodied? Why does jazz music often seem so important and yet so relaxed, even so natural? Without New York and the people he got to know there, he would never identify with this music and this culture the way he does today. But to this day Max is first and foremost a European musician and part of a young generation of jazz musicians in Europe who are very often in search of their own music and identity.
